Cave oddity

Cecila Kan (2024 Winter Tour)

To the tune of "Space Oddity"

Ground Control to Wilson 1
Ground Control to Wilson 1
Take your Mister choc and put your helmet on

(Ten)
Ground Control
(Nine)
To Wilson 1
(Eight, seven, six)
Commencing rigging
(Five)
Descender on
(Four, three, two)
Check your cow's tails
(One)
And may God's love
(Lift-off)
Be with you

This is Ground Control to Wilson 1
You've really made the grade
And the papers want to know whose pants you wear
Now it's time to leave the pitch head if you dare

This is Wilson 1 to Ground Control
I'm stepping through the floor
And I'm hanging in a most peculiar way
And the rocks look very different today

For here am I sitting in a harness
Far above the ground
My croll is half worn through
And there's nothing I can do

Though I'm past one thousand meters
I'm feeling very brave
And I think my survey knows which way to go
Tell Davey his toes are very weird
He knows

Ground Control to Wilson 1
Your battery's dead, there's something wrong
Can you hear me, Wilson 1?
Can you hear me, Wilson 1?
Can you hear me, Wilson 1?
Can you he—

Here am I sitting in my harness
Far above the ground
My croll is half worn through
And there's nothing I can do

Stayin' alive

Cecila Kan (2024 Winter Tour)

To the tune of "Stayin' Alive"

Well you can tell by the way I do my crawls
I'm a prussik man
No time to talk
Wellies wet and furry 's warm
I kick myself around since I was born

But now it's all right, it's okay
You can go the other way
We can try to understand
The Descent mag's effect on man

Whether you're a beaver or whether you're a caver
You are stayin' alive, stayin' alive
Feel the jammers slippin' and every msucle workin'
We are stayin' alive, stayin' alive
Ah ah ah ah stayin' alive, stayin' alive
Ah ah ah ah stayin' alive

Well now, I go low and I go high
And if I can't do either, I really try
Got the curse of cave gods and my booze
I'm a prussik man and I just can't lose

You know it's all right, it's okay
I'll live to see another cave
We can try to understand
The Descent mag's effect on man

Whether you're a beaver or whether you're a caver
You are stayin' alive, stayin' alive
Feel the jammers slippin' and every msucle workin'
We are stayin' alive, stayin' alive
Ah ah ah ah stayin' alive, stayin' alive
Ah ah ah ah stayin' alive

Life's going nowhere
Somebody help me
somebody help me, yeah
I'm stayin' alive

The Factory

Astrid and Kevin (2024 Winter Tour)

"Hanging Tree" - Hunger Games:
================================
Are you, are you, coming to Tolmin
They have plastic molds, that's "made in Italy"
Strange things've been made in here, stranger could it be
If we slept at mid-night at Fratnik's factory

9 mil Rope

Rhys Tyers and Clare Tan (2018 Slovenia Expedition)

To the tune of "Take Me Home, Country Roads"

Almost heaven, West Slovenia
Limestone mountains, blue Soca river
Caves are deep there, deeper than your dreams
High above the valleys, growing with the streams

*Chorus*
8 mil rope, take me home
To the biv' I belong
West Slovenia, hollow mountain
Take me home, 8 mil rope

All the old lags gather round here
Caving novice where's your sense of fear
Dark and dusty, rocks fall from on high
Methy taste of sweet tea, mud flake in my eye

*Chorus*
9 mil rope, take me home
To the biv' I belong
West Slovenia, hollow mountain
Take me home, 9 mil rope

I hear their voices in the dripping of the water
Sounds remind me of the biv' far away
And climbing up the rope I get a feeling that I should've been up hours ago, hours agoooo

*Chorus*
10 mil rope, take me home
To the biv' I belong
West Slovenia, hollow mountain
Take me home, 10 mil rope

*Chorus*
Flaming stakes, take me home
To the biv' I belong
West Slovenia, hollow mountain
Take me home, flaming stakes

Codeine

Celia Tinsley (2017 Slovenia Expedition)

To the tune of "Jolene"

(chorus)
Codeine, codeine, codeine, codeine!
I’m begging of you take away my pain
Codeine, codeine,codeine, codeine!
Please just numb this feeling in my brain.

As a powder you’re beyond compare
Effervescing when there’s water there
Your bubbles rising, bursting with a gleam

In tablet form you taste so sweet
Though I really shouldn’t eat you neat
But I cannot resist your lure codeine

(chorus)

The constant ache within my bones
The bruises which induce my moans
You take it all away from me codeine.

Every day and every night
I cannot live without the sight
or smell or taste or feel of you codeine.

But my prescriptions running low
Just fourteen packets left to go,
Two sheets per pack right now, then let me see. . .

There’s eight of you sealed in a sheet
That’s 2-2-4 left for this week
And then I’m on my own again codei . . . ne

Lead of Mine

Rebecca Diss (2017 Slovenia Expedition)

To the tune of "I Will Follow You Into the Dark"

Lead of mine
Someday you will die
But I'll be close behind
I'll follow you into the dark

No headtorch light
Or pitches to streamways wide
Just my bum wedged so tight
in a rift, that's really sharp

*Chorus*
If the caving gods decide, that they are satisfied
Block the entrance pitch, with a mighty landslide
If there's no way beyond, when we reach the front
Then I won't turn back, oh no I won't

At Imperial
I drank too much alcohol
I got liver damage
From a dodgy home brew

And I held my tum
as they told me, Hun
Beer is the heart of caving
So I never looked back

*Chorus*

You and me
Were the last ones to see
That pitch so dangly
With no hope to push on

And now we're all worn down
The time for slop is now
There's nothing to cry about
'Cause we'll be in the bivi soon
Under the brightest of moons

*Chorus*

Captain Kangaroo

Rick (2007?)

To the tune of "Flowers on the Wall"

I'm glad to see you're finally going pushing underground
Sick of seeing you down in the bivi, bumming round
You've finally bashed your oversuit in all those gaping rifts
You really need to stop using your arse for extra grip

*Chorus*
There's no hangars on the wall, and this rift is rather small
That don't bother me at all, I just wish I weren't so tall
Smoking pseudo cigs and pushing captain kangaroo
Don't tell me there's no way through
*Chorus*

Some people say it's tight and scrotty but they've never been
It's really the most beautiful passage I've ever seen
So come on won't you follow the blue lanex, off we go
Turn right at the rub point, it's guaranteed to go

*Chorus*

Go digging at the boulder choke and bolting in the rock
Sure of the connection sure as ten feet longs my great big nose
A parallel shaft series would be mighty fine indeed
Don't go pushing too far north, it's heading for space odyssey

*Chorus*

Dirty Old Rhyme, from Newsletter 18 Winter 1993

To the tune of "Dirty Old Town"

I met my pals down the caving stores
Drove up north in a clapped out van
At the Watford Gap stopped and Bought a mag
Dirty old mag, dirty old mag

We drove from there to the NPC
Had a smoke and a cup of tea
laid our heads on the filthy beds
Dirty old beds, dirty old beds.

Woke on the morn with a stonking horn
ate my beans, bacon and sweatcorn
dropped a log in the stinking bog
Dirty old bog, dirty old bog.

Then planned our day from a stained survey
packed our ropes in the tackle bags
Hurled abuse at the clubs old lags
Dirty old lags, dirty old lags.

Drove to the cave, it was 4 o'clock
A little late but who gave a fuck
We emptied our bags and strewn around our legs, was
Dirty old kegs, dirty old kegs.

Sighted the hole in the suns last ray
Rigged it fast without delay
Had a dump at the terminal sump
Dirty old sump, dirty old sump.

We were nearly out when we heard a shout
went back to see who it could be
at the final pitch was some poor bitch
Dirty old bitch, dirty old bitch.

We finally got changed and headed to the Pub
Drank some beer and ate some grub
Eyed the dames during silly games
Dirty old games, dirty old games.

Time to go home on a Sunday night
Packed the van had a final shite
So till the next time when we sing this rhyme
Dirty old rhyme, dirty old rhyme.
Dirty old rhyme, dirty old rhyme.

Ten Little Cavers, from Newsletter 17, Spring 1993

Ten little cavers,
Went off to do a mine.
One found a hidden shaft,
And then there were nine.

Nine little cavers,
Found Lancaster in spate.
One tried the water's depth,
And then there were eight.

Eight little cavers,
Exploring down in Devon.
One got locked inside a cave,
And then there were seven.

Seven little cavers,
Clearing chokes with picks.
One caught a falling rock,
And then there were six.

Six little cavers,
Learning how to dive.
One stayed down too long,
And then there were five.

Five little cavers,
On a calcite floor.
One sat on the weakest part,
And then there were four.

Four little cavers,
Abseiling down G.G.
One forgot his cowstails,
And then there were three.

Three little cavers,
Splashing through Ffynnon Ddu.
One slipped in the streamway,
And then there were two.

Two little cavers,
Prospecting in the sun.
One found a brand new pitch.
And then there was one.

One worried caver,
Took up dancing instead:
Tripped on a trailing bootlace
And now he too is dead.

 Other Classics

Puff, the magic dragon

An absolute classic from the bivi on the 2005-07 expos. We had it in Hungarian for 2008 courtesy of Gergely.

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee,
Little jackie paper loved that rascal puff,
And brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff. oh

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee,
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee.

Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sail
Jackie kept a lookout perched on puffs gigantic tail,
Noble kings and princes would bow wheneer they came,
Pirate ships would lower their flag when puff roared out his name. oh!

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee,
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee.

A dragon lives forever but not so little boys
Painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys.
One grey night it happened, jackie paper came no more
And puff that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar.

His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain,
Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane.
Without his life-long friend, puff could not be brave,
So puff that mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave. oh!

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee,
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee.

Where Have All the Flowers Gone?

Often sung by Niko Kral, as the 2011 Easter Tour mentions: "...Niko's now classic rendition of 'Where have all the flowers gone?' that only gets more hilarious each time he belts it out..."

[Verse 1]
Where have all the flowers gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the flowers gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the flowers gone?
Young girls have picked them, every one
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?

[Verse 2]
Where have all the young girls gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the young girls gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the young girls gone?
Gone for husbands, every one
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?

[Verse 3]
Where have all the husbands gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the husbands gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the husbands gone?
Gone for soldiers, every one
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?

[Verse 4]
Where have all the soldiers gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the soldiers gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the soldiers gone?
Gone to graveyards, every one
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?

[Verse 5]
Where have all the graveyards gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the graveyards gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the graveyards gone?
Gone to flowers, every one
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?

[Verse 1]
Where have all the flowers gone?

Where have all the flowers gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the flowers gone?
Young girls have picked them, every one
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?
