True Colour ortho-photographs
Ortho-rectified imagery is available for browsing on the following website: http://www.geopedia.si/#T105_x408448_y114888_s12_b4
There several datasets are available for browsing, which include:
-
a general map of land use (Topo), town boundaries, paths and points of interest at several different scales. The smallest scale is relatively unhelpful, but the medium scale is worth a look to check access to certain areas of the plateau.
-
a recent ortho-rectified (Ortofoto) image with (as of 2017) higher resolution than the conventional Gmaps or Gearth satellite imagery. Again worth a look for "armchair caving". The annual paths used by expedition members are resolvable, and so are most surface features, picked up and sometimes obscured by topographic shadowing.
-
a Hillshade layer named 'Relief' extracted from the airborne Digital Elevation Model. This layer is the result of an operation involving an artificial illumination (NW,45° from zenith) and its angle of incidence relative to the topographic surface which highlights the texture of the DEM. The DEM used here is too coarse to resolve the various shakeholes of the plateau which are the unmistakeable signature of exposed karst, but finer scale datasets are available which enable such features to appear clearer.
LiDAR Digital Elevation model
Light detection and Ranging is an active remote sensing technique mostly used to obtain high resolution Digital Elevation models. The raster datasets (X coordinate, Y coordinate, Z elevation) are available for download on the following page. http://gis.arso.gov.si/evode/profile.aspx?id=atlas_voda_Lidar@Arso
The datasets are available in ESRI format, that is readily usable on Geographical Information Systems such as ArcMap and are georectified using the D96 Transverse Mercator system. Many operations such as Hillshade, Slope maps or curvature maps can be performed on such datasets, highlighting edges, cliffs, shakeholes or textures on GIS programs.
Geological information
Another webviewer exists for those interested in the regional to local scale geology of the mountain and its region. This time it is the Slovenian Geological Survey's website. http://biotit.geo-zs.si/ogk100/
